My M1 Garand dilemma...

I have an M1 Garand that I bought several months ago as an addendum to another deal. Long story short, it's bitchin'.

However, I really haven't studied these rifles at all, I don't know how they work precisely or how they're put together, or how to disassemble/reassemble them. More importantly, I have no spare parts for this rifle and no ammo in this caliber.

Now you may say I can learn all of that and it's true, I can. You may also say I can buy the parts and ammo and that's true, also. I certainly can.

But I'm seriously thinking about selling it for the following reasons:

A. I already have a couple of SKS carbines and an SVT. I also have AKs at two different bugout locations out of state. How many semi-auto rifles do I really need?

B. I am familiar with the operation and maintenance of the above firearms, and am quite comfortable using them.

C. I have plenty of ammo for the above rifles, and some spare parts, too.

D. Getting established with the M1 as far as parts and ammo will be costly, and I feel the money might be better spent on other preps than in additional calibers. IOW, it's a logistical expense and headache I could do without.

So, I'm thinking it might be best to sell the Garand and use the dough elsewhere. However, not wanting to make a mistake, I figured I'd ask the folks here before I make a final decision.

Thanks for any input...

I love the Garand - they are the core of my SHTF rifles....but understand your situation. Probably best to sell the Garand and move on.

Regardless of the guns you have - I will suggest getting the Lee Precision Reloading Kit....they have a 50th anniversary kit that has everything and costs about $100....only need to add dies and reloading components. Anyone that has guns...should get a basic reloading kit. ....in my opinion....allows you to put together about 3X to 5X ....possibly 10X the ammo stash for the same cost as buying factory ammo....and it is a great hobby ...and you get to shoot more.

The M1 is a great weapon and worth the expense and time IMHO.
At the moment M2 ball ammo is available from the CMP at very reasonable prices.

While the M1 does not form the core of my groups defense plan the are a force to be reckoned with. I must admit however that I am biased. WWII weapons are where my collection started and I still have a soft spot for old war horses.

Owned a couple...classic old workhorse, the Garand. Sold both of them years ago. Too heavy to carry around and it only holds 8 rounds.

With today's ammo prices, any solid surplus rifle that shoots cheaper or at least more readily available .30 caliber ammo...is a big plus.

Springfield '03A3, Nagant, FAL, HK, etc. Saigas in .308 are what I would recommend today. I would love to see RAA bring in a Saiga in 7.62x54 Russian and 5.45x39....

BTW, have you ever seen pictures of John Garand ice skating in his living room?

Before you sell, take a look at the manual available on this site: http://www.surplusrifle.com/combo_deals.htm

Scroll down until you find the CD ROM with the M1. I've bought some of these before, good quality info at a fair price!

Edit: If you're in need of M1 parts, check this out: http://www.sarcoinc.com/m1g.html

Hive,

Here's a link to a video for field stripping the M1 Garand:

should you end up keeping it, that is...

AKs are great, but with the issue sights, forget about hitting a man sized target past about 200 yards. I can nail 'em at 400 80+% of the time (prone, slung) with a Garand, and I'm not even that great a shot.

IOW, the Garand fills an important role that the AK does not. Give it a few tries, IMO field stripping an M1 is easier than an AK.

The M1 Garand is very easy, I'd say simple to learn if you can learn an AK it's a piece of cake.

Or you could just pack it up and send it to me, I'd find room in my safe for yet another.
